How to shoot strobe/daylight mix on a bright...
At least once a year, I try to produce a fashion shoot at The Joshua Tree National Park. An immense and varied desert location and it is one of those places where you simply point your camera at any direction and it looks amazing. I put together a small team of one model, one artist providing both makeup and hair, a fashion stylist, and a photo assistant. I wanted to produce images that were...

Photoshop ABC's
So over the weekend what started as an idle tweet by Mark Jobson turned into a 3 ways tweetfest with Mark, Sean Armenta and myself working our way through a Photoshop ABC and I thought it might be quite good fun to put it up here to show that we actually managed it! And I don’t think we cheated too much! Below is an edited version of the transcript, (though it hasn’t been altered too...

Huge review of Photosop CS5 on Ars Technica
Over at tech website Ars they’ve done a huge review of Photoshop CS5 Extended for Mac where they’ve gone into great detail. It’s a massive 8 page review featuring loads of comment, video and images and is well worth the read! It’s not always the case with new versions of Photoshop but CS5 looks well worth the purchase and plenty of Clic friends that we’ve spoken to...

Photoshop Tips & Tricks: Adding Noise
Noise. What is Noise? And why is Noise important to you? Well it’s not as abstract a question as it may seem, for a start to clarify; I’m referring to Noise in the Adobe Photoshop sense. While I’m sure there is an Adobe approved definition of noise out there on the internets somewhere, for our target audience of beginners and novices, it may be useful to think of noise as the digital equivalent...

If you're a creative then watch this!
This might seem like it’s a little at odds with the fashion orientated content that we put up on Clic La Mode however this video of Harlan Ellison, a science fiction writer is something that we should all watch and watch often! As a creative please watch this and everytime Harlan says “writer” please insert your job title and think of the impact that this has when applied to...

Top Ten Tips - To Email Etiquette When Contacting...
First impressions count, they really do! The first time someone sees your work, your website, your portfolio they will make a judgement on you. Making Sense Of Your Archives & Invoice Numbering...
When I was starting out I picked up a really simple tip for numbering your invoices. It made such a difference to my invoices that I have adopted as my way of organising all my shoot archives too and I swear by it! It’s based around reversing the date so that everything becomes listed in chronological order. So for invoices I use the relevant year and month, add a sequential numbering system and...

Show Assisting For Make-Up Artists by Carol Brown
Following on from the previous article on producing show make-up Carol has written an article about assisting on shows. The best advice I could give to anyone looking to assist would be to persevere with emailing make-up artists and agencies. Most agencies keep a record of good people (a very good ex-assistant of mine was on an agency “help register” and they now represent her). I appreciate, and...

Producing A Make-Up Look For Fashion Shows by...
Fashion Show make up design I recently blogged a summary of the Spring Summer 2010 fashion show make up looks which you can see on the following link (see the article here). Shortly after completing the article I asked myself why go to all that trouble when it’s just as easy to look on Style.com and get backstage photographs. Especially when, in the case of something like the Galliano show, there...

“Six Ways To Die In A Bath”
A good few years ago I used to shoot the fashion editorials for some friends of mine who were publishing a monthly listings magazine in Manchester and there was one shoot in particular that stood out, “Six Ways To Die In A Bath”. About six months after the shoot I made notes on the whole process as a behind-the-scenes article and diary but at the time I wasn’t blogging so I didn’t have the...

Where do you see yourself in five years time? In ten years time? Shooting ad campaigns for Gucci? Fashion editor of Vogue? Head make up artist for Vivienne Westwood at fashion week? Or perhaps a more modest dream of steadily making a living doing what you love, shooting regularly, having a book and website you are proud of, a list of regular clients and bringing in a steady income? Ok, to make it...

The Best Camera... Is The Nearest One To Hand by...
Chase Jarvis has produced a wonderful book, iphone app & community based around the principle of “The Best Camera Is The One That’s With You” for which he uses his iPhone (http://bit.ly/9Wks2m). I have to agree. I love the iPhone, the camera in the 3G model and all the fantastic apps available for tinkering with your images. I love them so much that, although I’ve started this post by talking...

Carol Brown Reviews The Make-up Of The SS10 Shows
Make up from all the major Ready To Wear Spring/Summer 2010 shows. There are lots of browns, varying in strength from the very natural through to the “how-good-I’d-like-to-look-in-a-perfect-world” natural (enhanced / hyper-natural) and in this first section ending with the quite natural skin but a little bit more of an obvious eye or lip. It’s all about the care and the subtlety,...

Designer Fashion For The Masses Or Selling Out? by...
I am a fashion snob. I love fashion. I love the exclusivity of designer fashion. I love the feeling of walking into a designer store walking on the soft pile carpet, having the luxury of space and admiring the garments sparsely hung around the store. I love the hand feel of the beautiful fabrics, I appreciate the cut of a designer garment, and I love not having to elbow my way past the hoi polloi...
